Deaf Students Get a Post-Christmas Boost from KFC

KFC & customers help to raise $48,000 to enable more Tuition and Enrichment classes

KFC, the restaurant that serves Singapore's favourite finger lickin' good chicken meal, with strong support from its customers, helped to raise $48,000 over the Christmas festive period through sales of the Christmas Buddy Meal, with KFC donating 10 cents for every meal purchased.

The total amount is also made up from the cost savings in producing a frills-free television commercial for Christmas which was shot using a hand-held video camera. The advertisement featured KFC employees, including one Deaf staff, 'singing along' to Jingle Bells using sign language.

The monies will be donated to fund the expansion of SADeaf's Tuition and Enrichment Programme for Deaf students. Two additional tuition centres will be established this year making a total of 4 tuition centres which will cater to about 100 Deaf students.

The students will be able to catch up on various school subjects and improve their self-confidence under the guidance of qualified tutors. The tutors are passionate volunteers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Welfare Services Club (WSC) Regular Service Project for the Hearing Impaired (RSPHI) who are equipped with the knowledge of Deaf psychology, communication and culture. Each tutor will guide no more than two students to ensure every student gets the full attention of the tutor.

This programme is open to Deaf students whom many are enrolled in School for the Deaf as well as in mainstream schools.

Funds raised will enable SADeaf to increase the progamme capacity and accommodate up to 50 more students for two years.

One student who will immediately benefit from the expanded tuition programme is the son of Mrs. Lucy Wee. She said, "We are very happy that our son can now be accommodated in the progamme. Enrichment programmes are essential to help my son in his studies. With KFC's donation, it will open up a door of opportunity for our family. I'm certain that other parents with Deaf child will be just as pleased."

Mr. Michael Gian, KFC's Chief Executive Officer, said KFC is thrilled that the fund-raising effort can immediately benefit Deaf students. "Many of them have worked hard in their schools and are deserving of additional support. We are happy that we and our customers have helped to make this happen."

"KFC and SADeaf have worked together for several years to help improve the quality of life amongst the Deaf community. In addition to providing career opportunities within KFC, we are now funding a programme to improve the academic performance of Deaf students, providing them with a sound foundation on which to chart their career paths. It is our privilege to be able to support such deserving members of our community."

Mr. Ando Yeo, Executive Director of Singapore Association for the Deaf said that the support of a social-minded corporation like KFC is invaluable in raising public awareness of the needs of the Deaf."

"KFC has gone that extra mile in creating a more conducive workplace for persons with disabilities. Many of their Deaf employees count among their long-service staff and have risen through the ranks. KFC is truly a friend of the Deaf."

About KFC : Ambassador for the Deaf

The reason behind our success is the continuous support of the local community. It is therefore befitting that KFC Singapore should be a socially responsible corporation to the community that has helped us achieve growth and success over the years.

Since January 2003, KFC has been working with The Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) to create employment opportunities through opening Deaf-operated restaurants, as well as to promote Deaf awareness in Singapore. The very first Deaf-operated fast food restaurant in Singapore was opened in Toa Payoh Lorong 1 in March 2003, followed by the second at Fu Chun Community Club in Woodlands in July 2005 and another in Jurong West in March 2007. At present, there are more than 60 Deaf staff working in KFC restaurants.

In order to foster effective communication with the Deaf, KFC staff from various departments have been attending sign language courses at SADeaf since the conceptualization stage of the Deaf-operated restaurant back in 2002.

KFC was appointed Ambassador for the Deaf in 2004 for its commitment in promoting Deaf awareness amongst its staff and customers. Besides being given the honour of “Friend of the Deaf” by SADeaf, KFC also received the highest honour of "The President's Social Service Award" in 2006.
